Your prenatal check-up schedule

✓ All standard check-ups in this list are covered by public health insurance (GKV). Two exceptions are not automatically covered: the NIPT screening (only covered if you're 35+ or your doctor identifies a medical reason — otherwise self-pay, approx. €150–300) and the detailed Feindiagnostik ultrasound at week 20 (the basic scan is covered; the detailed version is often self-pay unless medically indicated, approx. €50–150).
Week 6–8
Initial appointment & Mutterpass
Confirm pregnancy via ultrasound. Due date, medical history, first urine + blood tests. You receive your Mutterpass, carry it always.
Week 9–12
1st ultrasound ("Erstes Screening")
Confirms gestational age, heartbeat, checks for multiples. Blood screen for rubella, syphilis, HIV (optional), blood group.
Every 4 weeks
Routine check-up
Weight, blood pressure, urine test, baby heartbeat, fundal height. Talk about nutrition, movement, any symptoms.
Week 19–22
2nd ultrasound ("Feindiagnostik" option)
Organ scan, heart, brain, spine, kidneys. Basic scan covered by insurance. Detailed "Feindiagnostik" often self-pay unless indicated.
Week 24–27
Gestational diabetes screening
Sugar drink test at the practice. Covered by insurance. Antibody screen is also repeated now.
Week 27–29
Anti-D injection (if Rh-negative)
Only if you are Rh-negative and baby is Rh-positive. Prevents antibody formation that could affect future pregnancies.
Week 29–32
3rd ultrasound + CTG begins
Final scan, growth, position, placenta. CTG monitoring of baby's heartbeat begins at routine visits.
From week 32
Visits every 2 weeks
Routine check-ups double in frequency. Hepatitis B test, discuss birth plan, hospital registration.
Week 35–37
GBS vaginal swab
Check for Group-B Strep bacteria. Informs whether antibiotics are needed during labour.
Week 34Info
Maternity protection starts
Six weeks before due date you stop working. You receive Mutterschaftsgeld via your Krankenkasse.
Week 40
Due date & monitoring
If baby is late (common!) monitoring moves to every 2–3 days, usually at the hospital.
Beyond the check-ups

What else your insurance quietly covers.

Most international parents discover these benefits by accident, or not at all. Pregnancy yoga, postnatal recovery, a trained helper at home when you can't cope, it's all in your Krankenkasse's catalogue. You just have to ask.

💡
Not sure what you qualify for? Call your Krankenkasse directly and ask. They're obligated to explain your Leistungen in clear language, and most Berlin Kassen have English-speaking hotlines.
